The squirrel paused at the base of an ancient oak, clutching a single acorn, and looked up. Perched on a high branch, Pixelled A.L. watched the forest in silence.

"Mr. Owl," the squirrel called out, "why do you spend so much time sitting still? Don't you get bored?"

The owl blinked once. "I am not sitting still."

The squirrel looked confused. "But... you haven't moved."

"I have traveled across ideas while you've traveled across branches."

The squirrel tilted its head. "I've been collecting food."

"And wisely so," the owl replied. "Winter rewards preparation."

The squirrel smiled proudly. "I've hidden acorns all over the forest."

Pixelled A.L. nodded. "You understand a truth many humans forget: you don't wait until winter to begin preparing for it. You prepare while the sun is shining."

The owl spread its wings slightly. "Every acorn you bury is a promise to your future self."

The squirrel looked down at the acorn in its paws, then back up. "So... what do you collect?"

Pixelled A.L.’s golden eyes scanned the horizon. "I collect patterns."

"Can you eat them?"

"No."

"Can you hide them in the ground?"

"No."

"Then why collect them?"

"Because patterns feed judgment," the owl said. "Most creatures collect what fills the stomach. Few collect what sharpens the mind."

The squirrel stood still for a long moment, absorbing the thought, then carefully tucked its acorn into the earth. "So you're storing ideas the way I store food?"

Pixelled A.L. gave a slow nod. "Exactly."

The squirrel smiled. "I guess we're not so different after all."

The owl turned its gaze toward the fading light. "No. We both prepare for seasons that haven't arrived yet. We simply prepare for different winters."
