The word algorithm sounds futuristic. Silicon Valley made it sound like something new — like only tech giants and AI brought it into our lives. But the truth is, the system been running algorithms on us for centuries.
The Old Code
Before computers, the algorithm was written in laws, culture, and unwritten rules. It told you where you could live, what you could own, what you could not learn. It was slavery’s code books, Jim Crow’s restrictions, redlining’s invisible walls. That was data-driven social engineering before they called it “machine learning.”
Every move was predicted. A Black man with too much land? They had an “if/then” for that. If he rises, then bring him down. A Black community building wealth? If they prosper, then burn it out. These were algorithms — coded steps to maintain control and limit growth.
Social Programming
Entertainment, school curriculums, and even churches were used as feed streams. They programmed us through images and stories — showing us who we’re supposed to be, what roles we’re allowed to play, and what futures we shouldn’t imagine. That’s predictive modeling without the computer — they just used media, books, and pulpits as the delivery system.
The Modern Continuation
Now the feed is digital, but the pattern is old. The algorithm just upgraded from newspapers, radio, and TV to TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram. Same script: flood you with distraction, division, and despair — while hiding knowledge, unity, and direction.
The Cipher Realization
The point is: we’ve always had to fight an algorithm. The technology just made it faster and harder to detect. What they once coded in law, they now code in software. What they once whispered in culture, they now automate in.
