People act like having dogs and cats living in the house as family has always been part of Black culture.
It wasn't.
Go back through much of our history and you'll find a different relationship with animals. They had purpose. Dogs guarded villages and hunted. Cattle represented wealth. Goats, sheep, and chickens provided food. Horses were used for transportation and warfare. Animals were respected because they served important roles in the community.
That is a different relationship from the modern concept of pet ownership.
The idea of treating pets as children—celebrating birthdays, buying luxury clothing, pushing them in strollers, or spending thousands of dollars on companion-animal lifestyles—is largely a product of modern Western consumer culture. As societies became more urban, moved away from agriculture, and accumulated greater disposable income, an entire industry grew around companion animals.
That doesn't mean loving an animal is wrong.
It means understanding where the custom came from.
Before saying, "This is just what everybody does," consider the source.
Many things people believe are normal are simply customs inherited from another culture. There's nothing inherently wrong with adopting customs. The problem comes when people forget they adopted them and begin treating them as though they have always been part of their own traditions.
Everything has a source.
History doesn't only change when facts are altered. It also changes when borrowed customs are remembered as ancient traditions.
Infinite Mind isn't saying don't own a pet.
Infinite Mind is saying: know the difference between tradition and adoption.
Because if you don't know the source, you may eventually mistake someone else's culture for your own.
